AIDS links

When I was diagnosed with HIV in August, 1992, I went on a — well I guess you wouldn't call it a man-hunt exactly — but a search anyway to find information about the disease. At that time people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS had about a 4-year window of survival, which must have been somewhere in the back of my mind when, around 1996 I went into a pretty severe depression. I dropped out of the musicians' union, quit the orchestra I was playing in and more or less withdrew from playing, though I continued to teach. I imagine I wasn't very pleasant to live with (you can ask Andy about that).

After a couple years I realized that I missed playing the flute, that there must have been some reason I'd gotten my doctorate in the damned thing, and I'd sort of lost track of that in all the years of flute study. In an odd way, receiving the diagnosis of this life-threatening disease eventually brought me to a place where I realized how important the flute specifically, and music in general are to me. So I rejoined the union, began to pick up the pieces of my freelance career and to give recitals again. If you're interested in what I'm doing these days, please visit my "about me" page.

I wouldn't wish such a diagnosis on anyone, but in a way it was a blessing in that it helped me realize what was really important to me. I am glad to say that I am now (generally) fairly happy, relatively healthy, and able to share the fruits of my AIDS info search with you.
