Hello Mark,

Concerning the piccolo cork. Remember, the piccolo head is NOT conical like the flute head. It is a cylinder on any conical piccolo. A for the proper distance, you should have a piccolo cleaning rod with a mark on it. Place the cork with the mark in the center, then lip all three octaves of D without changing fingering. All three octaves should be in tune. If the middle octave is flat (probably), push the cork in a tiny bit and try again. Once the octaves are in tune, try the highest notes. The proper position is a compromise between the octaves being in tune and the highest notes playing properly. The position is normally 1-3 mm to the right of the 'proper' position.
