Subject: Re: theory book for young players

I am teaching a very young beginner (4th grade) and am looking for a theory book to supplement her flute studies. Does anyone know of any theory workbooks that would be useful for young flute students? The only ones I ran across are written especially for pianists, so I'm looking for a series that would work well for other instrumentalists.

Dear Rebecca,

There are several theory workbooks specifically for flute students (and very young flute students also) that have been suggested by list members in past posts. You can retrieve the posts by going to the FLUTElist archives and searching using the term Theory.

Here's a short list:
Best, Jen Cluff
-----------------------------------
"Explorations in Music", by Joanne Haroutounian. There are 7 workbooks (that come with CD's for ear-training) that cover everything from the very basics for children of age 6-9 all the way to first year college theory. Read the first flute teacher reviews for this title at:

--------------------------------
Theory Made Easy for Little Children (2 volumes) by Lina Ng.
Aimed at ages 4-7:

--------------------------
Standard Theory books recommended:
Mark Sarnecki Preliminary Rudiments and Rudiments 1-2
----------------------------
Eric Taylor's "Music Theory in Practice" workbooks published by the Associated
Board of the Royal Schools of Music in England (uses British terms for note values)
-------------------------
For older flute students:

Title : Flute Theory Workout
Author : Lisa Garner Santa

See this title at:

Flute/Theory Workout - by Lisa Garner Santa, Matthew Santa, and Thomas Hughes
The Flute/Theory Workout efficiently introduces full-range scalar technique while introducing music theory fundamentals at the same time. The included accompanimet CD not only adds variety to your practice, but can also assist in improving your rhythm, technical evenness and intonation and can even serve as a backdrop for beginning improvisation! The Flute/Theory Workout is available from:
www.fluteworld.com and flute4u.com

For older theory students (suggested by a listmember):

Music Theory for the Bored and Confused, Book I
The book is by David E. Walden and is published by Berandol Music Limited.
